TENSILE CHAIR

The tensile chair is a wooden chair, curved over one plane. The challenge is to make the wooden chair as slim as possible, while a large cantilever makes people question how this is possible without shattering the wood. The slim appearance of the chair is possible by conveying the tensile forces of the cantilever to steel cables, hidden under the surface. The steel cables are clamped to a threaded end, and by turning the bolt at the foot of the chair, you can loosen or tension the chair and the amount of suspension.

The effect of different types of wood is created by treating the oak wood with different amounts of varnish. When completely loose, the chair can be stored flat. The S-shape of the chair is the result of trapezium shaped timber, all angles relative to each other add up to the organic shape of the chair.
