TIMBER TOP-UP

During my graduation I researched how to top-up and transform vacant office space for dwellings in Amsterdam, using timber construction. By an integral approach, a top-up and retrofit become affordable. A vacated office of the Dutch navy at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam (the former seinschool) was used as a test case. Comparing old and new load calculation methods, I proved three to four levels where possible without structural improvements, if lightweight timber construction is used. A first layer of cross laminated timber walls on top of the existing structure provides maximum design freedom in the upper levels, where structural insulated panels are used in combination with hollow core timber slabs to reduce weight.

Timber top-up is my graduation project at the studio of Architectural Engineering, faculty of Architecture, TU Delft.
